Common description
It is a town in the Greek municipality of Nafpaktia, in the peripheral unit of Aetolia-Acarnania.
Theater of the homonymous naval battle of 1571 between the Ottoman fleet and the Holy League.
The name of the locality derives from the ancient Greek ναῦς (nàus = «ship») and πήγνυμι (pégnümi = «I build»), which recalls a legend according to which in 1104 BC. some Hellenic tribes would have built ships to pass on the opposite side of the Gulf of Corinth.
The castle of Lepanto, of which the port is a part, was built by the ancient Greeks and then enlarged and modernized by the Venetians and Florentines.
Today it is the only Castle in Europe with five defense zones.
Today the city is an important Greek tourist centre, economic center for the western part of the Akarnania-Aetolia region, and has strong economic connections with the main port of Patras.
In 2005, two branches of the technical university of Messolonghi were established there.
